Adolf Born, illustrator (12 June 1930 – 22 May 2016)
Adolf Born was a Czech illustrator, scenic designer, filmmaker, and caricaturist, who received his visual arts education at the School of Applied Arts in Prague (1949-1955), in the Department of Caricature and Newspaper Drawing. Well known as a cartoonist, due to censorship, he began to focus more on book illustration and on animation. In 1966, in collaboration with Gene Deitch, Born animated the first ever screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Born in 1914 in Rožňová Neporadza, Bedná studied Latin, Czech and Slovak at the Charles University in Prague (1934 - 1938) and at the Comenius University in Bratislava (1938 - 1940). He taught at preparatory schools, worked at the Ministry of Information in Bratislava, then became a screenplay editor and screenwriter at Czechoslovak Film Bratislava.
