Title

Equal suffrage; the results of an investigation in Colorado made for the Collegiate Equal Suffrage League of New York State

Subject

Collegiate Equal Suffrage League.
Women -- Suffrage -- Colorado.

Description

Sumner was an American economist whose work centered on labor issues particularly in relation to women and children. This work examines the effects of suffrage on "political and social life," using Colorado as a case study. “As for the loss in womanly characteristic sometimes alleged to have resulted, it is difficult to find any evidence to show that voting affects this side of a woman’s character any more than purchasing a garden-hose.” Sumner concludes that the Colorado experiment “certainly indicates that equal suffrage is a step in the direction of better citizenship” (pgs. 259-260).
