Description

Whitman’s Death Mask, March 27, 1892 taken by Samuel Murry who was assisted by Thomas Eakins, William R. O’Donovan, and Edward W. Boulton.

This is a second generation of the poet’s death mask. The number of copies is unknown, but it is quite rare. The original (still containing hair from Whitman’s beard) is in the Houghton Library at Harvard. Another version, with the mask elaborated into a full sculptured head, is in the Laurence Hutton Collection of Life and Death Masks at Princeton. Another version is in the Hoover Library at McDaniel College, a gift of Dr. Henry Mc Comas who was himself a mask maker and made copies of his own collection.
