Seventh edition (More recently referred to as the 6th edition.) Second issue. (This second issue can be distinguished from the seventh edition, first issue which has “Third Edition” erroneously printed on its title page).
This edition is also known as the suppressed edition of Leaves of Grass because it was withdrawn from publication when the District Attorney of Boston investigated some language in it on instruction from Attorney General Marston. For a short time, the book was prohibited from being sent through the mails. Whitman refused to expurgate the passages in question and subsequently took the plates to other publishers.
