Description

Democratic Vistas. Washington D.C., 1871 (1870 on copyright page). Printed by J. S. Redfield, New York.

The book is a long essay (three combined). The book, published in a cheap hard paper cover, matches the paper and design of the 1871 first printing of Leaves of Grass and the first printing of A Passage to India. About 500 copies were printed, and the book never sold well; and, unfortunately, is one of Whitman’s lesser known works. American poet Robert Frost said Democratic Vistas is one of the most underappreciated books in American Literature.
