Description

Leaves of Grass. Boston. Thayer and Eldridge, year 85 of the States, 1860-61.

Third edition. The frontispiece portrait is on irregularly tinted paper, from a painting by Charles Hine.

This edition includes additional poems with the “Children of Adam” and “Calamus” groups being the most important. It was published in many issues, in various colors and textures of cloth, and with differing ornaments. On the verso of the title page, in addition to the regular copyright notice, we find that the book was electrotyped at the Boston Stereotype Foundry, Printed by George C. Rand & Avery. The resulting plates would later be used for an unauthorized edition.

This copy of the third edition fits the description of the few early copies bound up and sent to England.
