Leaves of Grass, Brooklyn, 1856.

Second edition. Green cloth, gilt title on front cover. On back strip gilt quotation form Emerson’s letter: “I greet you at the beginning of a great career.” It was published at Whitman’s expense by Fowler and Wells, and it contains their advertisements on the last page.

Only 1,000 copies of the second edition were printed. This edition contains 36 poems to which Whitman added titles.
