Republic of Texas $3.00 (three dollars) change note
Description
This change note was issued in Houston by the Republic of Texas. These notes were authorized to supplement the Star Note series, which were in denominations of $5.00 and higher. A total amount of $10,000.00 was authorized on December 14, 1837 and issued March 1838. A steamship printed within an ornate medallion comprises the left border of the note. A vignette of a male holding an urn and reclining is printed in the upper-center of the note. A portrait of a Thomas Jefferson appears in the center of the right border of the note. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed along the top edge of the note; the number ''1372'' is handwritten adjacent to it. The plate designation ''A'' is printed in the upper-right corner of the note. An eagle is printed in the center of the lower edge of the note. The following imprint appears in the lower-right corner: Childs, Clark & Co. N. Orleans. The note is signed on the recto by N. B. Howe, Chief Clerk, and Asa Brigham, Treasurer (The Papers of Mireabeau Buonaparte Lamar, Volume 2 and TSHA). Brigham was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, first treasurer of the Republic of Texas, and mayor of Austin (TSHA). CR: H-27.
